Verona, Italy

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

When you think of Verona, Italy the first thing that most often comes to mind is Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.  A visit to see the charming balcony is on every itinerary. Except, Verona has something else equally famous and that is an exceptional Opera Festival which is held every summer.

What makes this festival so exceptional is the remarkable opera house, the Arena di Verona. A Roman amphitheatre, 2000 years old with perfect sound creates an atmosphere that can not be forgotten.  It is in this unique and historic open air setting that opera lovers can experience the finest productions and electrifying performances by many of the world’s renowned performers and musicians. One of the reasons for these outstanding productions is that, the Italian audience is extremely knowledgeable and demanding.  When they like something in the preformance they will applaud and call out for a performer to repeat an aria. However, do not be concerned, not everyone in the audience is an aficionado, there are many, casual opera-goers who attend. The programme will have something that is familiar to all, making this a memorable experience for anyone who attends.  The thing is, once you have attended a performance at the Arena di Verona you are spoiled, nothing else can compare.  It is magical!

A group tour to Italy should include memorable experiences. A custom group tour with Select Travel Service is sure to do that. We especially want you to be absorbed into the culture and that is why we included unique opportunities such as the Verona Opera Festival into our tours. Three of the deluxe hotels in Venice and their executive chefs are working with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in preparing special menus that evolve around exhibits that will be at the museum until December 10, 2009. The menus will consist of dishes from recipes that relate to the theme of the exhibits. The ultimate artistic experience! Venice is only one of the remarkable cites to visit on any trip to Italy. Select Travel Service can take you there and create a customized group culinary tour that emphasizes the remarkable food and great wines in the various regions of Italy, or perhaps a custom itinerary of the renowned art in the exceptional museums throughout this exciting country. Borghese Gardens On Two Wheels

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Veni, vidi, bicicletti — I came, I saw, I cycled. While you may not feel sufficiently confident (or crazy) to challenge the chaos of Rome’s traffic on a bicyle, the Eternal City offers some wonderful, and relatively safe places to wander around on two wheels. One such place is the gardens of Villa Borghese, the equivalent to New York’s Central Park. Villa Borghese houses Galleria Borghese, one of the city’s most impressive and famous art collections. The gardens offer a substantial area of tranquility away from the bustle of the city. You can rent a bike for approximately Euro 15 for a couple of hours and take yourself off to wander the pathways of the gardens. Select Travel offers this downtime activity as part of many of our speciality group tours to Rome and Italy.

Bird’s Eye View of Rome

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Many visitors to the Eternal City are unware of two unique vantage points from which to admire the city from ahigh. For a mere 5 euros, you can climb to the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica for the classic photo opportunity of Via della Conciliazione stretching into the distance towards the Tiber River. New for 2009, the much-maligned Victor Emmanuel monument has now opened it’s rooftop to visitors. The “Rome from the Sky” elevator takes visitors to a 360 degree city panorama. Perhaps the best news of all is that you can see the whole city, except the monument itself which is often referred to by locals as “the typewriter”. Our pilgrimages and choir tours to Rome often feature unusual sightseeing events such as these.
