Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

In 2009, the music world around the globe commemorates the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Haydn started his career as a member of the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the city to which he also returned after working for the Princes Esterházy in today’s Burgenland and Hungary. In Vienna, he enjoyed his worldly fame for nineteen years.  To Mozart he was a fatherly friend, whilst Beethoven was his most famous student. Numerous sites in Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland and Sopron attest to the life of the then and now popular composer Joseph Haydn.

Not only does the Vienna Musikverein contain some of the best concert halls, but also one of the biggest collections of music, which is the source of two Haydn exhibitions in 2009.  Haydn House, Mozart House and St. Stephen’s Cathedral are some of the original venues for Haydn’s concerts and performances in Vienna. Visit Haydn’s memorial in Mariahilfer Straße and see – or even hear! – Haydn at the historic Anker Clock!  Vienna has so much to offer for the cultural tourist – let Select Travel design your tour to your exact requirements, ensuring you avoid disappointment and miss nothing!

Museum of Impressionism, Giverny

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Calling all art museum travel planners! The new Museum of Impressionism in Giverny, France, is must see.

To celebrate the opening of this wonderful new collection, a very special inaugural exhibition on display from 1 May until 15 August, 2009 brings together some 20 paintings created by Monet himself, all of them featuring his gardens at Giverny. For the first time visitors can admire the Nympheas masterpieces in the very village where they were created and go from the reality of the motif to its pictorial portrayal by the master of Giverny on the same day. The exhibition focuses on Monet’s double creation work. A keen gardener, Monet skillfully landscaped his garden which then became a motif for his paintings. He “invented” the landscape he was going to paint. Warwick Castle’s “New” Dungeon

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Warwick Castle located in the Heart of England, and a short drive from Stratford-upon-Avon is one of Europe’s best preserved.  It has witnessed some of the darkest, bloodiest and most frightening times in English history. The new Castle Dungeon experience is set in the mid 14th century, when theregion was gripped by the plague. In true Dungeon style, gore seekers will be greeted by decaying bodies, chanting monks, torture implements, execution and ‘the labyrinth of lost souls’ - a fantastic scary mirror maze. This new attraction will certainly bring Warwick Castle history to life.  A “must see” for educational and student groups.
