Explore these World Heritage Sites from the perspective of art and architecture. A two week celebration of the masters of Botticelli, Titian, Michelangelo and so many others.
After arriving in Rome, you will be transferred to your hotel for check-in, The balance of the day is at leisure. This evening you will be transferred by private coach, including assistance, to a typical restaurant for a welcome dinner.
Morning tour of Rome will include Trevi Fountain, representing the Baroque era. Created in 1735 it blends together the art of Bernini and Borromini. Visit Santa Maria Maggiore -one of the major basilica, it is rich in mosaics from the 5th century. It also contains some Greek architecture from as late as 130 AD. Walk through Piazza Navona, admiring the evolutionary cycle of a supreme achievement in urban, architectural design. Then up Capitol Hill to the Capitoline summit, once 124 steps and 19 meters wide and made up of fifteen flights of eight steps each. As one ascends each step, the horizon widens and the view becomes ever richer in detail. Atop the stairs is Santa Maria in Aracoeli, where art and religion triumph in the works by the cosmati mosaic artists, Benefial, Michelangelo, Bernini and others. This morning we visit Vatican City, including the Vatican Museums and the most famous Sistine chapel. Within the Vatican Museum, you will find 1400 rooms 7 kilometers in length 1,000 square meters of frames Paintings by Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Rubens, Frescoes by Michelangelo, Raffaello, Greek, Egyptian, Roman and Etruscan statues (Laocoonet, Apollo del Belvedere, Apoxionunos), Sarcophagus of Costantino-Augusto, Spiral staircase Tapestry gallery, geographical maps gallery, Raphael's rooms. In the Sistine chapel, you will find: Works of art by Botticelli, Parigino, Signorelli, Pinturicchio "The Last Judgment" the masterpiece of Michelangelo, Sacred, modern art collection, Vatican Apostolic Library. A brief walk across St. Peters Square will bring you to the Basilica of St. Peters, where you may wish to spend the balance of the day. The largest cupola (dome) was designed by Michelangelo for the rebuilt Basilica of St. Peter's. Balance of the day available for personal sightseeing and relaxation. Overnight Rome
This morning we will visit the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Scala Santa, Aurelian Walls, Via Appia Porta San Sebastiano, Quo Vadis, Circus O Maxensius and the tomb of his son, Romulus, Tomb of Cecilia Metella, and the Catacombs. Lunch is on your own. This afternoon we will Visit the Bath of Caracalla and Aventine Hill. We will also visit the following: The Colosseum - Constructed from A.D. 71 to 80, it is one of the most exquisite examples of Imperial architecture. The shape of the arc is of Etruscan heritage. From this work of art, many bridges and aqueducts were created. The Roman Forum - What remains of this historic structure emanates from the Temple of Saturno. The temple traditionally became a legacy when the Targuinius were driven out of Rome and was inaugurated in 497 BC. It was reconstructed in 42 BC. The arch of Settimio Severo, constructed in 203 BC, presents four columns on each side. Its rich decorations include four large panels illustrating the war against the Parti. Palazzo Venezia This palace represents the early architecture of the 15th century. It was created by Alberti and Sangallo. Overnight Rome
Leaving Rome and travelling to the south, you will take the "Highway to the Sun," crossing the fertile Latium countryside, including the vineyards of the Roman Castles and the grain and vegetable cultivation of the Ciociaria. Approximately halfway to Naples, you will see a splendid view of the Abbey of Montecassino, famous for its complete destruction during World War II and its exact reconstruction. Leaving Latium, we enter Campania, passing Caserta and the sumptuous Palace of the Spanish Bourbons (18th century). Arriving in Naples you see St. Lucia, an ancient fishers' village, and Castel Dell'Ovo that seems to float on the water. Time permitting in Naples, you can visit the Archeologico or the Capodimonte Museum. You will depart to Sorrento via the Amalfi Drive. Overnight Sorrento
A morning excursion to the ruins of Pompeii is scheduled. This ancient Greek-Roman city was completely buried under ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A. D. Pompeii was almost completely brought to light by the excavations started in 1748 and which are still in progress. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant in Pompeii. After lunch we will return to Sorrento, where your afternoon will be at leisure. Overnight Sorrento
This morning we will be heading north to Assisi, where we will be visiting the Basilica of St. Francis and the tomb. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant. We will then proceed to Florence, the home of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Giotto, and Dante. Florence, an antique, Roman city state of medieval importance, was also the first modern, worldwide city. Italians feel that from Florence came the heart of the Italian language. Overnight Florence
As Pisa developed, many styles of architecture blossomed, such as Romanesque Classic, Lombard Gothic, and Arabic. Piazza del Duomo, or Campo Dei Miracoli, is a large green lawn on which rise the isolated blocks of the Cathedral, the Bell Tower, The Baptistry, and the Cemetery. The Bell Tower, well known as the Leaning Tower, was initially constructed in 1174 under the direction of Bonanno and continued until 1185 when it was first noticed the soil, being alluvion in origin, was giving way. Work began again in 1275 under Giovanni Di Simone and broke off again in 1284. The tower was brought to its present state in 1350 by Tommaso Pisano. The Basilica work was begun by Buschetto in 1064. During the 12th century Rainaldo enlarged it and constructed the Facade. The inside is adorned with two bronze angels and a crucifix of Giambologna (1602) and some paintings of Cimabue (1302), Tino Da Camaino, Giovanni Pisano, and Beccafumi. The Baptistry, an elegant and circular building, was begun in 1152 by Diotallevi and finished during the 13th century. Overnight Florence
This morning you will have a guided tour of Florence to including the Academy Museum, home of the original "David" created by Michelangelo, and the Cappella Medice at San Lorenzo. In Piazza Santa Croce you will visit Santa Croce Church, where great artists, such as Michelangelo, are buried. Your afternoon is at leisure. Tonight you will be transferred to a typical restaurant for dinner.
This morning you will enjoy a guided tour of Florence where you will visit the Cathedral Santa Maria Del Fiore, the Baptistry, Giotto's Bell Tower, and the Uffizzi Gallery. The Uffizzi Gallery, the best Italian gallery, contains works by Martini, Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raffaello, and Caravagglo. In Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florence, you can admire the extraordinary open air museum. Your afternoon is at leisure. Overnight Florence
This morning we will depart for Ravenna, where a local guide will conduct a tour of the town. Its architecture is described by Italians as "medio orientali" and include Vitale and Gallia Placidia. The city is drowning in mosaics, made for the Christian Emperors and perfectly preserved. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant. We then depart for Venice, city of Bellini, Giorgione, Tiziano, Tintoretto and Lotto Veronese. The architecture or the city constructed on the water must be explained by "Le Corbusier." This morning you will have a guided tour of Venice with a local guide. You will be transferred via a vaporetto to San Marco Square where you will meet your local guide for a morning walking tour of Venice. You will admire San Marco Square, the Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, and the Ponte Rialto. The afternoon is at leisure. Overnight Venice
Today we will have a full day excursion on the Brenta River. We will depart by private coach to Padova until we reach Stra. Here we will visit the Villa Pisani with the assistance of a local, English speaking guide. Villa Pisani is the biggest and most fascinating of Brenta's villas. It was first constructed under the direction of G. Frigimelica and then by F. M. Preti to celebrate the Dodge Alvise Pisani. Over the years it has housed royalty, beginning with Napoleon. Its inside frescoes by Tiepolo and its park with many statues and "1Labirinto" will make this villa unforgettable. Mid morning we begin our trip along the Brenta River, you will be able to admire several Palladian villas. We stop for lunch at a local restaurant en route. Afterwards we will continue our river cruise and meet our English speaking guide to visit the famous Valmarana Villa. The Villa Valmarana (Widmann) is an 18th century villa with a very large lounge decorated by frescoes. Its park is adorned with statues and fountains. Following this visit we will stop to visit the famous Villa Foscari (La Malcontenta), built by Palladio for his brothers Nicola and Alvise Foscari and their wives, Elisabetta Dolfin and Elisabetta Loredan. It is thought to be one of the best works by Palladio and is still owned by the Foscari family. Following this visit we will return by boat to Piazzale St. Marco. This evening we will transfer by foot to a typical restaurant for our farewell dinner.
