Pilgrim Travel - a new division of Select Travel

We are delighted to announce the launch of Pilgrim Travel, a new division of Select Travel Service.  Pilgrim Travel group tours are based on the lives and times of St. Patrick and St. David, the Patron Saints of Ireland and Wales, and on the wider history and influence of the Celtic Church.

This is an exciting new joint venture between Select and specialist academic institutions in Ireland and Wales. The project has enjoyed wide support and cooperation of the national tourist boards of Wales and Ireland. The tours are designed to offer a broader concept of the traditional term “pilgrimage” by combining the historical and cultural influences of Christianity across two millennia, with the more traditional spiritual experiences. The detailed research that underpins each tour ensures a unique and authentic travel experience.

We invite you to contact us for sample itineraries with which to whet the appetite of your local church pastor or educators. Then, in keeping with Select’s ability to custom design all group itineraries, we will then make amendments to best suit your client’s particular needs - tour dates, hotels, itinerary content and costs.

Further information can be found at  www.pilgrimtravel.com or www.selecttravel.com

Dine in Dublin - with Friends

One of the most successful events created by Select is the “Dinner with Irish Friends”. Using our ever extending list of “friends in high places”, we are able to offer selected groups the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful evening of home gown hospitality in Dublin. Opening the doors to her Georgian style residence in a tiny Dublin neighborhood, our hostess welcomes up to 30 guests for an elegant dinner party which is joined by a selection of her hand picked friends from Dublin society. A delightful evening of lively conversation and exchange of views is always ensured and invariably the evening is a highlight of the tour.

Special Group Access - a Hallmark of Select’s Tours

For many of Select’s groups visiting Europe, privileged access to museums and collections is standard operating procedure! However many group agents who are not

regular clients of Select are missing out on a golden sales opportunity and a wonderful experience for their most valued group clients. For example did you know that private after hours tours are available at several of Britain’s Royal Palaces? During the months of August and September, Select can arrange private after hours tours of Buckingham Palace State Rooms as well as the reopened Queen’s Gallery and its exhibition “Treasures” which includes paintings, jewelry, watercolors, armour and other priceless items from the Royal Collection.

Windsor Castle, the world’s oldest and largest occupied castle and favorite home of the Queen is also available for private evening tours. Tours include the State Apartments and are available on selected evenings from August through March.

Opportunities for these special visits are limited, so contact us soon for 2005.

Due to its somewhat remote location in the north west corner of Spain, Santiago de Compestela is too often overlooked on Spanish itineraries. But with good air connections, its a quick hop from either Madrid or Bilbao and makes for a nice interlude between the great museums of the capital and Bilbao’s Guggenheim. The capital of Galicia, Santiago is a true jewel of a city. Its roots lie as a centre of pilgrimage. Following his execution in AD44, the remains of the Apostle St. James found their way to Santiago and the magnificent cathedral was built to house them. With its Baroque towers soaring above the Praza do Obridorio, the cathedral became one of the great shrines of Christendom. To this day, some pilgrims continue the Middle Age tradition of making the journey to the site on foot, from as far as Paris some 900 miles away.

In addition to the cathedral, other “must sees” include the Monastery of St. Martin, the 18th century Rajoy Palace and Gelmirez Palace. All are conveniently located in a concentrated area around La Plaza del Obradoiro, the city’s central square. The scale of these massive Baroque style brick constructions is simply awe inspiring. This modern day yet unspoiled city is well worth the consideration of a couple of nights in any northern Spanish itinerary.
