Religious Heritage in Great Britain

This tour visits the most iconic heritage places and buildings in England and Scotland. From the great Cathedral at Canterbury to quiet and remote Iona Abbey.  Additional ideas would be visiting some of the smaller Parish Churches of Britain, St David's in Wales and 3 related cathedrals of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester. Like all our tours they are designed to be amended to suit your group's particular needs other samples can be seen elsewhere on this website.

SAMPLE DAILY ITINERARY BELOW

SOME OF THE TOUR’S SIGHTS.

Day 1 – Canterbury


On arrival meet with your professional tour guide for the journey to the county of Kent, known as "The Garden of England". En-route travel through some glorious pastoral scenes before arriving in Canterbury to visit the Cathedral, the headquarters of the Anglican Church and a centre for international pilgrimage. Overnight stay in Canterbury.

Day 2 – Canterbury


A full free day at leisure in Canterbury. Some city suggested visits could include a recreation of John Bunyan's Canterbury Tales, a visit to the World Heritage Site of St Augustine's Abbey that dates from AD 598 or to St Martin's Church, the oldest church in England still in continuous use. Please note that sometimes we can arrange for groups to stay within the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral and at some times of the year it is possible for unique services to be arranged with the Archbishop present. Overnight stay in Canterbury.

Day 3 – Cambridge & Lincoln


After breakfast journey north over the River Thames towards York, en route stopping in the University city of Cambridge for a tour of Kings College Chapel. Travel through "The Fens" into Lincolnshire and to the small city of Lincoln. Visit the cathedral, built in 1311 and once the tallest building in Europe. It's memorial chapels commemorate the areas very strong links with the origins of North America and Australia. Please contact us if you want us to help plan itineraries based on The Pilgrim Fathers, Captain Cook or other group genealogy tours. Evensong is highly recommended. Overnight stay in Lincoln.

Day 4 – York and Durham


Enjoy a morning walking tour of one of Britain's most fascinating cities to include a tour of York Minster, one of the largest cathedrals in England. A short journey north brings us to Durham, described by some as the most beautiful city in Britain. A  guided tour of magnificent Durham Cathedral shows us the most complete Norman building in Europe and the burial place of St Cuthbert and The Venerable Bede. Overnight stay in Newcastle upon Tyne area.

Day 5 – Lindisfarne


This morning cross the tidal causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, see the monastery founded by St Aiden in AD635 before crossing the border into Scotland and on to Edinburgh. Overnight stay in Edinburgh.

Day 6 – Edinburgh


Begin the day with an introductory locally guided tour that will take you in to Edinburgh Castle and St Giles Cathedral with its exquisite Thistle Chapel, walk on The Royal Mile and see the Georgian era "New Town". Afternoon at leisure in Edinburgh, one of the world's most attractive and spectacular cities. Overnight stay in Edinburgh.

Day 7 – St. Andrews & The Highlands


Departure from Edinburgh, cross the Firth of Forth into the Ancient Kingdom of Fife and visit the city of St Andrews famed for its University and being "the home of Golf". Visits are included to both St Andrews Castle and St Andrews Cathedral. Continue west via Perth and across beautiful countryside in to The Highlands where the scenery really does become breathtaking and spectacular. See the stunning mountain scenery and past lochs, heather and a hairy cow or two  en route to the small port town of Oban. Overnight stay in Oban.

Day 8 – Mull & Iona


Sail early this morning from Oban over to the island of Mull, cross this island of peaceful moorland glens, dramatic mountain peaks and little crofts to the passenger ferry dock at Fionnphort. Catch a small ferry across the short distance to the island of Iona. On this scared isle you can see the Benedictine Abbey and Nunnery which may be 1400 years old. Our wonderful route is then repeated to get us back to Oban. Overnight stay in Oban.

Day 9 – Glasgow


After breakfast travel south back in to mountains and travel along the Bonnie, Bonnie, Banks of Loch Lomond to Glasgow. Experience a city tour of this rejuvenated city and cross the border back in to England. Overnight stay in Lancashire.

Day 10 – Chester


Travelling between Manchester and Liverpool arrive in the enchanting small city of Chester. Founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century A.D. It's known for its extensive Roman walls made of local red sandstone. In the old city, the Rows is a shopping district distinguished by 2-level covered arcades and Tudor-style half-timber buildings. Visit Chester Cathedral, founded as a Benedictine abbey in 1092, our cathedral has a rich and varied history, and as you’ll discover, a diverse and exciting future.
Dedicated to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Chester Cathedral’s mission is to celebrate God’s presence in the world by offering worship and prayer, welcome and hospitality, pastoral care and education, and a creative use of our heritage. We aim to embrace all sectors of the community whilst ensuring the survival of this magnificent cathedral for future generations. End the day with a pleasant drive south to The Midlands. Overnight stay in Warwickshire. 

Day 11 – Coventry and Stratford-upon-Avon


Begin the morning with a visit to the 2 cathedrals in Coventry. The original 1,000 year old cathedral was bombed in World War 2 and the ruins have been left alongside the modern cathedral as permanent memorial. A short drive brings us first to the small village of Shottery where  a vist will be made to Anne Hathaway's cottage, the pre marital home of William Shakespeare's wife. Arriving in Startford-upon-Avon visit Shakespeare's Birthplace and hsi final resting place at Holy Trinity Church. Overnight stay  in Warwickshire.  

Day 12 – The Cotswolds and Oxford


This morning head into the picturesque Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, for many the epitome of the classic English countryside with sleepy villages of honey-coloured stone and colourful gardens. Continue to Oxford with a visit to Christ Church College. Two of its famous landmarks, Tom Tower, by Christopher Wren, and Oxford’s Cathedral spire, contribute to the city’s celebrated skyline and mark Christ Church as a unique dual foundation; one of Oxford University's largest Colleges and the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of Oxford. Stroll through the tranquil landscape of Christ Church Meadow where Longhorn cattle graze at the centre of a bustling city. Enter the majestic Meadow Gate and walk in the footsteps of academics, kings and queens, a little girl called Alice and even a few wizards! Gaze upon the beautiful buildings, elegant quadrangles and vibrant stained glass windows and gain an insight into the rich history of an Oxford college and the life of a community dedicated to learning. Overnight stay in London.

Day 13 – London


A full day extended guided tour of central London. Highlights include Visits are included firstly to St Paul's Cathedral, with its vast dome, is an iconic feature of the London skyline and known across the world. When you step inside you will marvel at the Cathedral's awe-inspiring interior and uncover fascinating stories about its history and the rich work and worship that takes place here, all set over five levels, the highest of which will give you unrivalled views over London. Continue to visit Westminster Abbey and explore a place rich in history, a place that's touched the lives of kings, queens, statesmen and soldiers, poets, priests, heroes and villains since 960AD. Westminster Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the resting place of more than 3,000 great Britons. Return to St Paul's in the evening timed to coincide with Evensong. Overnight stay in London.

Day 14 – London


A full free day at leisure in London. You may wish to explore and visit some of the museums many of which such as The British Museum are still free to enter. Overnight stay in London.

Day 15 – Departure


An executive motor coach is provided for the transfer to London's Heathrow Airport.
