The Reformation Trail in Europe

On arrival meet with a professional tour guide for the short journey in to central Berlin and experience an introductory tour of some famous landmarks. Overnight stay in Berlin.

Depart on an extended guided tour of Berlin. Once the capital of Prussia and leading cultural centre of the 1920s, today Berlin, the new capital of Germany is characterised by its dazzling modernity and breathtaking architecture. Berlin is reinventing itself once again. Few cities have been shaped to such an extent by history and undergone as much major transformation as Berlin. Visit the Checkpoint Charlie, see remaining sections of "The Wall", Potsdam and The Pergamon Museum. Overnight stay in Berlin.

After breakfast visit the Church of St Thomas where Luther preached and JS Bach performed. After some time exploring our journey continues to Lutherstadt Eisleben to visit the birth house of Martin Luther, St Andrews Church where he preached his last 4 sermons and the house where he died. Overnight stay in Erfurt.

Begin the day in the company of a local step on guide for a walking tour of the historical centre. Luther was a student at the famous University between 1501 and 1505 and it was nearby that he was struck by lightning and entered the Augustinian Monastery, which you too will do (not the lightning bit we hope). Visit Erfurt Cathedral where he was ordained as a priest and see the Luther Monument and St Michaels Church. Overnight stay in Erfurt.

Travel the short distance west to Eisenach where we visit the home where Martin Luther lived as a school boy which is now a museum before visiting Wartburg Castle, where Martin Luther was in exile and where he translated the New Testament. Departing for Wurzburg situated on the River Main in the northern part of Bavaria. One of its most prominent features is the imposing Fortress of Marienberg, which is built with a commanding view over the town. You will also see the magnificent Hofkirche, the Cathedral of St Kilian and the Old Bridge. Overnight stay in Wurzburg.

Drive along the Romantic Route to Augsburg. From the Main valley to the foot of the Bavarian Alps, experience some of Germany's most beautiful and historical countryside, passing through great medieval towns and cities such as Rothenberg, Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen. Upon reaching Augsburg, enjoy an orientation tour which will include the Fuggerei Quarter which was founded in 1519 to house the town poor. View the Maximillianstrasse lined by mansions and private houses, built by the wealthier burgers during the Renaissance period, as well as the gothic Cathedral and a Benedictine Abbey. Overnight stay in Augsburg.

Morning departure for Salzburg. Continue along the Romantic Route towards Fussen, and stop to visit the fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein. This is one of the most beautiful and mesmerizing castles in the world. King Ludwig's bedroom is the highlight of the tour with its exquisite craftsmanship. After leaving Fussen continue to the graceful city of Salzburg. Overnight stay in Salzburg.

Morning tour of Salzburg, the city of Mozart and the Sound of Music. Highlights include the elegant Renaissance style cathedral dating from the 17th century, and the magnificent Hohensalzburg Fortress which overlooks the city from its perch 400ft above the streets. A stop is also made at No.9 Getreidegasse, the house in which Mozart was born. This afternoon continue with a half day tour discovering the sights associated with the Oscar-winning film "the Sound of Music". Visit the beautiful Mirabell Gardens (where Maria and the Von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi") and Zum Heiligen Michael Church (wedding church in the film). See the Castles Leopoldsdron and Hellbrunn, and Nonnberg Abbey (convent where the Baron and Maria were wed in 1927). You will journey through the quaint villages of Fuschlsee and St Gilgen and along Lake Wolfgang, before travelling back to central Salzburg. Overnight stay in Salzburg.
